Since design patents are based mostly on the external and ornamental features of an invention the drawings do not have reference numbers or leader lines and require shading lines to show contours and surfaces. Therefore the design patent drawings require a higher level of “art” than the utility patent drawings. This is where it is necessary to have a good balance between artist and engineer.
